BACK

With straight needles, cast on 86(98-106-114-126) sts.

Ribbing: Row 1 (RS): K2, * p2, k2, rep from * across.

Row 2: P2, * k2, p2, rep from * across. Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 1 1/2”, end on WS, dec 0(1-1-0-1) st at each end of last row – 86(96-104-114-124) sts. Work in St st, dec 1 st each side every 1 1/4(1 1/4-1 1/4-1 1/2-1 1/2)” 5 times – 76(86-94-104-114) sts. Work even until piece measures 8 1/2(8 1/2-9-9 1/2-10)” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Armholes: Bind off 5(5-6-7-7) sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 66(76-82-90-100) sts. Dec 1 st each side every RS row 5(10-10-12-14) times – 56(56-62-66-72) sts. Work even until armholes measure 7(7-7 1/2-8-8 1/2)”, end on WS.

Shape Shoulders: Bind off 5(5-6-7-9) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 4(4-6-7-8) sts at beg of the next 2 rows. Bind off remaining 38 sts.



LEFT FRONT

With straight needles, cast on 38(42-46-50-54) sts. Work in ribbing same as back for 1 1/2”, end on WS, dec 1(1-0-0-0) st at each end of last row – 36(40-46-50-54) sts. Work in St st, dec 1 st at beg of RS rows every 1 1/4(1 1/4- 1 1/4-1 1/2-1 1/2)” 5 times – 31(35-41-45-49) sts. Work even until piece measures 8 1/2(8 1/2-9-9 1/2-10)” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Armhole: Bind off 5(5-6-7-7) sts at beg of the next row, k to end – 26(30-35-38-42) sts. Purl 1 row. Dec 1 st at beg of the next 5(10-10-12-14) RS rows. AT THE SAME TIME, dec 1 st at end of the next RS row for neck. Continuing to dec at armhole edge, rep neck dec every 4th row 4(7-11-7-2) times more, then every 6th row 5(3-1-4-8) times. When all decs have been completed, work even on 9(9-12-14-17) sts until armhole measures 7(7-7 1/2-8-8 1/2)”, end on WS. Bind off 5(5-6-7-9) sts at armhole edge once, then 4(4-6-7-8) sts once for shoulder.



RIGHT FRONT

Work to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping. Work body decs at end of RS rows. Bind off for armhole and shoulder on WS rows. Work neck decs at beg of RS rows and armhole decs at end of RS rows.



SLEEVES

With straight needles, cast on 38(38-42-42-42) sts. Work in ribbing same as back for 1 1/2”, end on WS, dec 0(0-1-1-0) st at each end of last row – 38(38-40-40-42) sts. Work in St st, inc 1 st each side every 3/4(3/4-1/2-1/2-1/2)” 10(10-11-13-15) times – 58(58-62-66-72) sts. Work even until sleeve measures 9 1/2” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Cap: Bind off 5(5-6-7-7) sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 48(48-50-52-58) sts. Dec 1 st each side every 4th row 0(0-1-3-2) times, then every RS row 17917-15-11-13) times, end on WS. Bind off remaining 14(14-18-24-28) sts.



FINISHING

Sew shoulder seams. Sew in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams.

Front/Neckband: With RS facing, using crochet hook, beg at lower right front edge, work in sc around entire front and neck edge to lower left front edge, working a multiple of 3 sc’s. Turn.

Row 2 (WS): Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and ch 2), skip 2 sc’s, dc in next sc, * ch 2, skip 2 sc’s, dc in next sc, rep from * across. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and ch 2), skip ch-2 space, dc in next dc, * ch 2, skip ch-2 space, dc in next dc, rep from * across. Rep Row 3 six times more or until band measures 3”. Fasten off.

BODY OF BAG
With larger straight needles, using 2 strands of yarn held tog, cast on 45 sts. Work even in Pat St for 3”, end on WS.

Inc Row 1 (RS): Work in pat as established, work M1p, p1, M1p over each p1 between 6-st cables – 51 sts. Work in pat as established, (working p3 instead of each p1 on RS rows) until piece measures 5” from beg, end on WS.

Inc Row 2 (RS): Work in pat as established, work p1, M1p, p1 over each p2 on each side of 4-st cables – 55 sts. Work in pat as established, (working p3 instead of each p2 on RS rows) until piece measures approximately 6” from beg, end on Row 7 of Pat St. Change to smaller straight needles.

Bottom of Bag: Dec Row (WS): K across, dec 1 st in center of each 4-st and 6-st cable – 49 sts. Work even in Garter St until 5 Garter St ridges have been completed, end on RS.

Inc Row (WS): K across, inc 1 st in center of each 4-st and 6-st cable – 55 sts. Change to larger straight needles.

Next Row (RS): K1, p3, k4, p3, (k6, p3) 3 times, k6, p3, k4, p3, k1. Beg with Row 2, work in Pat St, (working p3 instead of each p1 and p2 on RS rows) until piece measures 1” above last Garter St ridge, end on WS.

Dec Row 1 (RS): Work in pat as established, work p2 tog over each p2 on each side of 4-st cables – 51 sts. Work in pat as established, (working p3 instead of each p1 on RS rows) until piece measures approximately 3” above last Garter St ridge, end on WS.

Dec Row 2 (RS): Work in pat as established, work p3 tog over each p3 between 6-st cables – 45 sts. Work even in Pat St until piece measures 6” above last Garter St ridge, end on WS. Bind off.



SIDE GUSSET (Make 2)

With RS facing, using smaller straight needles and 2 strands of yarn held tog, pick up and k6 sts along side of Bottom of Bag (Garter St ridges). Work even in Garter St until gusset, when slightly stretched, reaches to cast-on and bound-off edges of bag, end on WS. Bind off. Sew sides of Gusset to edges of body of bag. Repeat on the other side of body of bag.


FINISHING
Belt: With crochet hook, using 2 strands of yarn held tog, make a chain long enough to fit around bag 1” down from top edge plus 4”. Work 1 sc 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, work 3 sc’s in last ch, work 1 sc in each st of foundation ch to beg. Fasten off. Fold one end of belt over bar of buckle and sew in place.

Belt Holders (Make 8): With RS facing, using crochet hook, join single strand of yarn in p2 on one side of 4-st cable 1” down from top of bag. Ch for ¾”, then join with a sl st in bag ¾” below beg of ch. Fasten off. Repeat in each p2 on both sides of 4-st cables around bag. Beg at center front, draw belt through belt holders, then buckle in front.

Sew top edges of bag tog 1” in from each side.

Top Edging: With RS facing, using crochet hook and 2 strands of yarn held tog, beg at one side edge, work in Reverse sc around top edge of bag, join with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

Handles (Make 2): With dpn’s, using 1 strand of yarn, cast on 3 sts. Make I-Cord as follows:

Row 1: * K3, do not turn work. Slide sts to beg of needle to work next row from RS. Rep from * until cord measures 8”. Fasten off. Sew one end of first handle to each side of top opening on front of bag. Repeat with second handle on back of bag.
